We have one rule in our homeschool, and it has become something of a family motto in our home.
“It’s okay to get it wrong; it’s not ok to not try.”
We started saying this daily when our little perfectionist became so afraid of failure that she wouldn’t even put herself in a vulnerable position that could have a less than perfect outcome. We constantly reassure her that failure is normal, a part of life, and even an expectation as a means to learn and grow. Just because it’s not perfect, doesn’t make it all wrong. Creating a celebration of Kiki’s and all of our failures has gradually encouraged her to step out of her comfort zone. This mantra gives our littles permission to make mistakes and frees them from the pressure of perfection in academics, while setting clear expectations of their learning requirements. There will be a time for grades and marks and red pens down the road. Building a foundation for sparking passion and excitement in learning is, by and large, the most valuable lesson I could teach my children today.
